An ice maker designed to last the lifetime of a refrigerator is a thing of the past. We now live in a society that is in a hurry for the latest and the greatest, to throw away the old and bring in the new. The life of a modern ice maker is only about 5-years. And because of all the different parts that could break down, ice maker replacement versus ice maker repair is sometimes the most practical solution for consumers. But before you do anything, grab a cup of coffee and let’s explore some of the ways that an ice maker could malfunction.
Ice maker does not make ice
If the ice maker is not producing ice, examine the ice mold. If the ice mold contains full-sized ice cubes the problem is either the shut-off arm or the electrical supply to the ice maker harness connection. If the ice mold contains small cubes or no cubes at all, suspect the water supply. Perhaps the water source does not have enough pressure to operate the ice maker at full capacity. If the water supply is restricted in any way the fill tube might be clogged with a piece of ice.
Ice maker does not turn off
If the ice maker continues to make ice cubes, check the bail wire. Remember, when the collection bin is full, it lifts the bail wire which sends a signal to the ice maker that it can quit making ice. The bail wire has no doubt become stuck for some reason. The ice maker may need to be removed and serviced. If the problem persists, it may be time for a replacement ice maker.
Ice maker is frozen
If you would like to troubleshoot the ice maker yourself, first unplug the refrigerator. Find the fill tube. You can use a hair dryer to warm the tube and surrounding areas of the ice maker. This process will work better if the ice maker is removed allowing built up ice to melt.
